Prairie Primer Giveaway!

Welcome to Monday’s 30 Days of Homemaking for Girls Giveaway at Homegrown Mom!

Have you heard of the Prairie Primer?

When I first started talking about maybe homeschooling, my sister-in-law, now 25, told me that she remembered her favorite year homeschooling was one when her family did a Little House on the Prairie Unit. She remembered so much about that year, from making butter and corn cob dolls to a balloon out of a hog’s bladder.

Even if I hadn’t already been in love with Laura Ingalls, I would have wanted to do this unit because of how happy she was looking back on that year, more than fifteen years later!

I have been using this year-long unit study with my second grader, Soleil this year. It is intended for grades 3 – 8, but works well for an advanced younger reader, too. My older girl, Coco (14), has joined in on some of the projects, too.

Prairie Primer goes through each of the nine Little House books (the books themselves are not included). You’ll progress through one book per month, doing four days of assignments in every subject.

Prairie Primer covers:
Literature
Bible
History
Science
Language Arts
Some Math
Geography
Art
and my personal favorite… Homemaking!

We purchased some Little House supplemental books recommended by the Primer: The Little House Cookbook, The Little House Sewing Book, My Book of Little House Paper Dolls
and My Little House Crafts Book.

So far this year we’ve made corn cob dolls, johnny cakes, lemonade, butter, and too many things to list here. We’ve also fallen in love with the Ingalls. Many conversations around the dinner table have taken place with Soleil letting Daddy know what the Ingalls had done that day! One of my favorite thing about the Prairie Primer are the corresponding Bible and character questions that come with each day’s reading.

We’ve studied American History, the Presidents, and read several biographies like Louis Braille and Clara Barton. Soleil has learned about plants, various animals, germs, matter, and so much more.

I am in love with this curriculum, and I know you will be too! I bought this curriculum with my own money at the beginning of this school year, and no one paid me for this review :)

The author Margie Gray, however, has agreed to send one reader a copy of The Prairie Primer! (Did you read her post today on preparing for hard times? Good stuff!)

If you would like to enter, please leave a comment telling me this: When you were a kid, were you more like Mary, Laura, or (shudder) Nellie? If you don’t know the characters, just tell me why you’d like this!

I was a mix of both Mary and Laura I would say. Curious and stubborn but also a little reserved. My daughters and I would love this, thanks for the chance!

  2. Emma says

I was definitely more like Laura. I loved being outdoors and able to play and get dirty.

  3. Mary says

I was probably more like Laura. Never quiet and always asking questions. I have used the Primer with my older girls, excited for when my younger children can experince it as well.

  4. Lori says

When I was young, I was more like Laura than Mary or Nellie. I preferred outside activities and adventure more than inside activities; although now that I’m older I’m more like Mary! I always thought it would be great to have the Prairie Primer because we love the Little House series!

  5. Nina Matthews says

I was more like Mary! I always wanted to be inside doing the “womanly” work with my Granny. On the days I went out with my Bob I did turn into Laura somewhat but I was always wishing to be back inside doing other things!

  6. says

I was for sure a Mary!!!

My girls and I love these books. I have been looking for a good unit study to go with them. It looks like my search has ended!!

  7. Mommy of 3 says

I loved being outside with nature and the animals like Lara, but my personality was more of Mary’s. My little girl is a mixture of Lara and Mary, too. We would love to win this!

  8. Annie L says

I definitely have aspects of both in me but I probably lean more towards Mary!

  9. says

I thought I had a plan for next year, but now I am reconsidering! This sounds wonderful. I didn’t read Little House on the Prairie as a child and am really enjoying reading it to my kids right now.

I’d love this because it seems like a great way to learn and have fun together making memories.

I think I was more like Laura. I was definitely more interested in being outdoors and having fun and adventures than being responsible.

  11. Angela Wells says

I was a mix between Laura and Mary I think. I have one of each in my own girls :) I am still deciding what curriculum to use next year and now I really want to use this! We’ve read the first Little house book together this year and my girls have fallen in love with the characters already.

  12. Audra Tibboel says

I was definitely a Laura and just loved watching the show! In the end, my husband is actually related to the Wilder side of the family so Laura Ingalls is in my children’s family heritage :) How cool is that…we planned on doing an extended Little House study when all my children get a bit older and this would be perfect!!!

  13. Sara says

Definitely more like Laura! My husband is actually a huge fan of The Little House Series – even more than I am. We have three little girls and would love to work through this curriculum together. Thanks for the giveaway!

  14. says

I was (and probably still am) Laura….only I’m pretty sure I’ve never been that obedient! :) I would love to win this – it’s been on my wish list for a year.

  15. Gwendy says

I would have to say more like Laura, sweet but feisty!

I would love to do this unit study with my kiddos, we would enjoy it. The hands on stuff sounds wonderful.

  16. Wendy says

I think I was more like Mary. BTW -My girls and I just finished their first book of Little House books – Little House in the Big Woods. I think they are hooked! It has been fun to read together. I look forward to more! :o)

  17. Jenifer says

I love Mary for sure, but Nellie gave me so many laughs. The show and books display great wholesome way of life that in this day I long for for my family and for my daughter.

  18. says

Mostly Laura, though a little like Mary. I am the older of my sister and I. It seems I always knew what was better for her to do (and never hesitated to tell her), yet couldn’t see it for myself. I would love to win this. Thanks for the opportunity.

  19. Amy says

I think I was a little too much like Mary! I KNOW that’s what my sisters would say! I have been eyeing this study for a while and it would fit right in with our plans for next year!

  20. Sara R. says

I was more like Mary. I wanted to please and good. My heart was not on pleasing God, only on pleasing people. Thankfully I’m teaching my daughter that pleasing God is more important than pleasing people.

  21. Laura says

I was probably more like Mary but I used to pretend I was Laura (due to the same name). I had a bonnet and my own Little House on the Prairie dress too. I have been looking forward to doing a Little House unit study with my girls. This would be wonderful to have.
    Laura

  22. Ashley says

I would have to say mostly Laura but honestly a mix of all three;)
Thanks so much this sounds like a wonderful study.

  23. says

I was definitely a Mary with a bit of Laura. I loved the outdoors but was always the compliant child. Loved “Laura” books when I was a child, and now love reading them to my kids. We would benefit much from a copy of this unit study!

Unfortunately I am not familiar with the characters so I don’t know who I could relate to… I would like this because we are planning to homeschool our daughter (she’s only 10 months now) and this sounds like a wonderful curriculum! I was never taught housekeeping as a young woman which has caused quite a bit of struggles now that I am a full-time wife and mother. I definitely want to instill these things in my daughter!

  25. Melissa says

I was certainly more like Mary but I wanted to be like Laura….Now I want to be like Carolyn :)
    Thanks for the opportunity!

  26. Caitlin says

I was definitely like Mary. I was always terrified to get in trouble and very reserved. I love the books and would love to see all these activities! Thanks!

  27. Kimberly Crowe says

Good morning. I was more like Mary, very calm, quiet and responsible. And we love both the books and the tv shows.

  28. Corinthia says

I was definitely more like Laura, lol. One of my younger sisters would have fit the Mary-mold. I introduced Little House on the Prairie to my 6yo this past year. We’re almost through Little House in the Big Woods. My daughter LOVeS Laura Ingalls, and this past week has found her at her school desk each day in her beloved “Laura” bonnet. Her Dad and I were amused a few weeks ago, when she informed us that she’d no longer be calling us Mommy and Daddy, but wanted a Ma and Pa just like Laura, lol. I’d love to win this study for her.

  29. Dina says

I was probably more like Laura. I was not quiet and mild mannered like Mary nor was I like Nellie. Our family has enjoyed reading these books each summer. My daughter and I are starting a summer book club for her friends reading The Little House books this month. This would be a great addition to help plan activities for the girls.

  30. Jenny says

I honestly don’t know the characters, but I have heard great things about this. I’d love to have this to use with my daughter!

  31. Jennifer Ward says

Mary. I had an older brother who sometimes got in BIG trouble and I never wanted to disappoint my parents…also was quiet and loved to read…thank you for the opportunity to win this wonderful curriculum!

  32. Christie P says

Always thought I was like Laura – but I think I was most like Mary since I hate disappointing people, so I tried to be good.

    Thanks for the opportunity!
    Christie P

  33. Suzanne says

I was more like Laura and loved watching the Little House series while growing up. I have 3 daughters and have wanted this book for some time now. What wonderful things we can learn from the past! Thanks for the opportunity to win this book.

    Suzanne

  34. Kim says

I am not especially familiar with these books, but I wish I was. I’d love to learn about the practicality and morality this family lived along with my kids.

  35. says

I was definitely a more “Mary” type personality – not very social, kept to myself and loved to read and sew. In fact, the Laura Ingalls books are still on my daughters shelf today – I read them over and over again as a child.
    Blessings,
    Michelle

  36. Pam Graham says

I looked a lot like Laura, but my personality was more of a Mary. Would LOVE to win this book! Thanks for the opportunity.

  37. Julie Norris says

I was more like Laura. What a great give-away! Thank you for this opportunity!
    Julie

  38. melanie says

I would say I am a mix between Mary and Laura…stubborn, curious, and a bit introverted. I have looked at this curriculum before and I think we would love to do this…even though I have 3 boys and only 1 daughter.

  39. says

I would love to win this Prairie Primer!! We would love to do it this year. I am more like Mary–working in the home rather than outside! :) Thanks so much! ~Miranda
