Welcome to Monday’s 30 Days of Homemaking for Girls Giveaway at Homegrown Mom!
Have you heard of the Prairie Primer?
When I first started talking about maybe homeschooling, my sister-in-law, now 25, told me that she remembered her favorite year homeschooling was one when her family did a Little House on the Prairie Unit. She remembered so much about that year, from making butter and corn cob dolls to a balloon out of a hog’s bladder.
Even if I hadn’t already been in love with Laura Ingalls, I would have wanted to do this unit because of how happy she was looking back on that year, more than fifteen years later!
I have been using this year-long unit study with my second grader, Soleil this year. It is intended for grades 3 – 8, but works well for an advanced younger reader, too. My older girl, Coco (14), has joined in on some of the projects, too.
Prairie Primer goes through each of the nine Little House books (the books themselves are not included). You’ll progress through one book per month, doing four days of assignments in every subject.
Prairie Primer covers:
Literature
Bible
History
Science
Language Arts
Some Math
Geography
Art
and my personal favorite… Homemaking!
We purchased some Little House supplemental books recommended by the Primer: The Little House Cookbook, The Little House Sewing Book, My Book of Little House Paper Dolls
and My Little House Crafts Book.
So far this year we’ve made corn cob dolls, johnny cakes, lemonade, butter, and too many things to list here. We’ve also fallen in love with the Ingalls. Many conversations around the dinner table have taken place with Soleil letting Daddy know what the Ingalls had done that day! One of my favorite thing about the Prairie Primer are the corresponding Bible and character questions that come with each day’s reading.
We’ve studied American History, the Presidents, and read several biographies like Louis Braille and Clara Barton. Soleil has learned about plants, various animals, germs, matter, and so much more.
I am in love with this curriculum, and I know you will be too! I bought this curriculum with my own money at the beginning of this school year, and no one paid me for this review π
The author Margie Gray, however, has agreed to send one reader a copy of The Prairie Primer! (Did you read her post today on preparing for hard times? Good stuff!)
If you would like to enter, please leave a comment telling me this: When you were a kid, were you more like Mary, Laura, or (shudder) Nellie? If you don’t know the characters, just tell me why you’d like this!
Twinkle Mom @ Sunflower Faith says
I would have like to be more like Laura, but I was so much more like Mary; I was quiet and stood in the back alot.
Amy says
I was *kind* of bossy…. so sadly I’d say I was more like Nellie. I wasn’t a snot like she was though! lol!
Gina G. says
Looking back, I wish I had been more like Laura, but I must confess I was probably more like Nellie…how mortifying! I would love to win this!
Jamie says
Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy reading as a child. I am trying to reverse that with my children. My 9-year-old daughter LOVES to read and loves Laura Ingalls. We would love to win this π
Katie says
I think I was a Mary, more quiet and reserved than Laura was.
Burnie says
I was definitely more like Mary. I was always doing all the things I was supposed to be doing and learning came very easily for me.
Christan/MamaBearPing says
If you can believe it, I never read the Little House series as a kid. I watched the show, though! π
I’ve picked up the books here and there as an adult, but have not read all of them.
I would love to win this, not only to do it as a study with my daughters, but also so that I can go back through and enjoy the books I missed out on! This looks like a wonderful study to do, especially with three little girls in the house!
Liz says
I think I’m more a Mary kinda of girl. I also think this would be great for homeschooling my children.
Jessi says
I like to think I was like Laura, independent and maybe a little stubborn π I adore the LHOTP books, they are to this day some of my favorites!
Laura says
I think I was a cross between Mary and Laura. Quiet and shy and obedient like Mary, but at times a little curious and outgoing the way Laura was. I want my daughter to be the same way. Although in todays world, we only wish we could go back to those more “simple” times! I would love to win this for my daughter so she could experience that! Thank You! Love your Blog!
Merrilee says
I think I was probably more like Mary. My oldest daughter is clearly like Mary; my second daughter is definitely like Laura. π We have the book series as well as some of the supplemental books. My oldest dd would be thrilled if we did unit studies on LHOTP!
Sada says
I read the Little House books dozens of times when I was younger…I’m really looking forward to sharing them with my daughter.
I’d like to say that I’m like Laura, but I think I’m actually more like younger sister Carrie–always tagging along with the slightly older group (and trying to keep the peace between my beloved older sisters). π
Pamela says
I was definitely the older sister, Mary. Actually, I still am like Mary.
Ellen says
I was definitely Laura.
Jennifer N says
It’s been a long time since I’ve read the Little House books, but daughter is old enough to enjoy them. I’m the oldest sister, but I don’t think I liked having to be the responsible one, so I was probably somewhere between Mary and Laura.
Michelle says
I would have to say I was more like Laura – outgoing and independent!
Lorus says
Definitely Laura! She was my hero as a child!
When I was 10 I received a boxed set of all of her Little House series books and passed it on to my son when he turned 10. When my daughter turned 10, he didn’t want to share his set, because it was fragile from the many, many readings I, then he, had given it. I was thrilled when my MIL found an unused set exactly like it that had belonged to one of her girls. She gave it to my daughter and it has been read and read!
Lynn says
Not really familiar with the characters but will be soon! I just purchased the entire “Little House” book set by Laura Ingles Wilder and have been trying to figure out a good way to use them as a Unit Study and this would be SO PERFECT! My daughter LOVES to read them and can’t wait to start but I need the Study set first. This would be awesome for us!
Cheri says
As a kid, I was very much like Mary. I was motherly, refined, did what was asked of me and wanted everyone to like me. I wish now, I had been a little more adventurous like Laura, but I am doing that now as an adult.
My family would love to win this as we all love the Little House series (tv and books) and we are just starting next year with homeschooling, so this would be a great, wonderful way to get started!!!!! Thank you for the opportunity!!!!
Sarah Scott says
I hope I was like Laura… However i must admit there was some Nellie in me. Yikes!
Andrea says
HI! My parents told me that I was rambunctious, adventurous, willing to get dirty and play, speak my mind, and also willing to get revenge on the Nellie’s in my life. I’m proud to say that I was considered to be a Laura growing up, although I was never called Half Pint (Being 6′ 2″, that would sound a little funny)
π Laura is still my predominant nature, but as I grow and mature, I see the value in many of Mary’s wonderful characteristics as well and try to incorporate them alongside my Laura-ness.
I would LOVE to have this curriculum!!! I love all of this historical stuff…I don’t have kids yet but will someday and can actually use this in any 4th grade classroom that I teach in.
THANKS!!!
Carmen says
I would love to win this curriculum. I didn’t have the privelge to read the Little House books as a child, but now I am thoroughly enjoying reading them to my children. We have all learned so much from these books. I’m certain once we finish the series, we will read them all over again and again.
Jamie (@va_grown) says
I think of myself like Laura when I see her relationship with her father and how she was “the son he never had” and did a lot of “boy” things with him for the family. I was the same in our all girls family. I have the boxed set and all our kids (boys and girl) are enjoying them immensely. We live on a small farm, so they spark so much conversation about how we do things vs how they did things, etc. They are great learning books, even as fiction!
Carmen says
Forgot to add…I was very much like Mary as a child. My daughters, on the other hand, are both much more like Laura. =-)
Amanda says
I think I was probably more like Mary. I loved homeschooling the way she loved school. Great giveaway! I would love to try out this book!
Laura says
I think I was mix between Laura and Mary, at least in my opinion, my mom and sisters might have a different opinion. π
Ann says
I was like Laura. I loved being out doors, playing and just having simple fun.
Thank you for the chance to win the primer.
Hope says
I absolutely loved Little House on Prairie.. My favorite all time tv show and favorite books.. I am thankful to share it with my children.. I would say I am adventurous like Laura but a little bit of Mary also lives in me.. I would love to win the primer it would be a good edition to homeschooling our 5 children..
Angela says
I was more like Laura. I was a tomboy! What a wonderful giveaway. I loved watching and reading The Little House on the Prairie when I was growing up.
Tyra says
I was more like Mary. I adored the Little House books as child!! We loved the show as well!
Karen says
I would love to be entered into your giveaway. I have always loved Little House on the Prairie–the books and the tv series. I think that, even though I was the oldest, I was probably a little more like Laura π Thanks so much. Karen
Holly Schwartz says
I was more like Mary……bashful and bookish.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.

Megan Chandler says
I was totally a Laura. I was a sneak. But I loved the talked with my dad even when it was to talk some sense into me!!!!
Tanya Chilluffo says
As a little girl I was totally a Laura always looking for something and getting into mischief but as I got a little older I became a mary throwing myself into my studies and staying away from anything and everything that “might” go wrong. I think that this would be a great addition to my girls homeschooling resources and a great way for me to get back intouch with my inner little girl.
Mitzi W says
I was definitely like Mary. I liked to keep my parents and grandparents happy, was helpful, and for excitement I decorated and rearranged my bedroom! Occasionally my Laura side came out, when on the family ranch. My daughters are both more like Laura – digging in the dirt and into mischief!
Pietra says
Definitely like Laura! I still am today! Always too busy playing to want to be in the house cleaning. lol
Anne says
Laura-love this series!
Jennifer says
I was probably mostly like Mary. I was the oldest sister, pretty self-righteous, always trying to follow the rules, and help out around the house. I’ve “drooled” over this unit study for a while and we’re planning on covering these years of history next year, just finished the colonies and the American Revolution.
Jill says
Mary.
angela says
I always thought I was like Laura and my older sister Mary. This sounds very interesting!
Tara says
Mary
Melissa says
I was definitely a Laura. I always stood up for what I truly believed in, I got into trouble sometimes but really didn’t mean to cause it, got a little dirty, etc. My sister was much more a Mary. I would love to win this!
Laura says
As the oldest child, I identified more with Mary. What a neat idea for a series of lessons!
Stephanie H says
I am such a Laura! The funny thing now, is that I have four daughters and they fit the Ingalls girls to a T! My oldest who is almost 6 is just like Mary, down to my youngest, 9 months who would be like baby Grace! What a great giveaway!
Karen says
I would love to win this book. I think I was like Mary, the oldest child trying to help keep everyone else in order and helping out. We have an adopted daughter who has never read the books until this year and it is exciting to learn about these little girls and their lifestyle together.
Kristi says
I was probably more like Mary but not as responsible. Wanted to be more adventurous like Laura!
This looks great!
Nicole says
I absolutely loved The Little House series as a little girl and so its easy for me to see a little bit of each of them in me. Most of the time I was good and level headed like Mary, but I was also a daddy’s girl and way too curious for my own good like Laura. On the other hand I could throw a regular ole hissy fit like Nellie if I was a little too sleepy or if my older sister and brother refused to play with me.
I would love the oppurtunity to share this with my daughter and show her a little bit of the thing that greatly influenced her mom as a child.
Suanna says
I would love to win this, I used to always pretend to be Laura when I was a girl and now my girls play “Laura and Mary” on a regular basis. I love hearing them play.
Amy says
I was shy and quiet like Mary. My girls and I just got done reading The Long Winter. We would love to win this!
Shannon says
I am mostly like Laura – always trying to be as good as my older sister, and little jealous of her too. I also LOVED the outdoors and would spend days just wandering around the yard. I am in the middle of reading this series to my 5 children and we are loving all of the things we are learning but it would be great to have some supplemental ideas.
