Little Escapes

Little Escapes
As I’ve said before, getting totally away from everyone does something special for my soul. It just isn’t always manageable. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I was alone and not running errands. And as I like to remind my hubby, running errands doesn’t count.

If you promise not to tell him, though, it kind of does count. It’s all about perspective. Listening to the radio blasting and walking through a grocery store with no one asking for anything… definitely refreshing.

And we all need a little refreshment now and then. Which we can’t always get away to get.

What’s a mom to do? Little Escapes! I have become quite adept at sneaking in little amounts of time to do something that’s not on my to-do list and have a little break.

Are there little windows in your day where you could squeeze in a fifteen minute break? Just think of what you could do!

15 Min. Escapes:

If you’re worried about losing track of time, just set a timer.

  • Catch up on your favorite magazine, blog, or devotional.
  • Call a friend for a short chat.
  • Lie down and daydream.
  • Put your favorite songs on and dance around.
  • Watch part of a recorded show on TV.
  • Paint your nails.
  • Write in your journal.
  • Write your hubby a love note.
  • Sing a few worship songs.
  • Make a tropical-flavored drink and sit in the sun.
  • Have a cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa and snuggle with a blankie.
  • Look up potential vacation spots online. Even if you can only dream about going there someday!
  • Write a blog post or check in with your Facebook friends.
  • Take a quick walk around the block if you have older kids you can leave home.
  • Look at photos.
  • Of course, since you’re the mommy at home, no break is likely to ever be uninterrupted. And that’s okay! That’s why we plan a get-away-completely break every now and then. During these little escapes, you’re still home and you’re still Mommy. So just go with the flow and know that eventually you will have time to think a full sentence. I promise.

If someone gave you a couple hours right now-just for you-what would you do?

    Tips for Reluctant Pray-ers

    Beautiful Fourteen Year Old Girl

One mom I know asked me how she could be more creative with her prayers. What did that mean? After more conversation, she admitted that she felt like she was saying the same “good luck chant” every day before her kids went to school. I encouraged her to just speak from her heart, and over time she began to understand what that meant.

I don’t think God expects us to be creative with our prayers. I think He expects us to be transparent, submissive, and utterly honest. When it’s time to pray with your family, sometimes it’s the kids who are reluctant to pray. Sometimes it’s Mom or Dad. Either way, small steps with an encouraging attitude can set your kids on the path to being comfortable in their own (praying) skin.

    Start young
If at all possible, start praying aloud with your kids when they are babies. By the time they are older, it will be part of your everyday life. My girls have been praying since they could speak. But what if your kids are already older and you don’t know where to start? If you or they are uncomfortable, awkwardness can overwhelm you just enough to make you give up. I know this from working with kids of all ages over the years.

    Start small
At dinnertime, have everyone in the family go around and have everyone say thank you to God for one thing. Start and set an example like, “Thank you God for my family.” Sometimes reluctant pray-ers feel intimidated and don’t know how to start. This is an easy thing to expand on. Once you’ve done this for a few days and everyone is comfortable with the routine, add a sentence on. By starting with thanksgiving, you are teaching your kids to thank God before presenting requests.

    Next, Add a praise
Once you are all comfortable thanking God for things, you can suggest that you each praise God for who He is. Again, start off with an example. I praise you God, for being loving and merciful. And I thank you for my family and this good dinner.

Keep it simple! While you can certainly show an example of more heartfelt prayers at other times of the day, remember this is to encourage reluctant pray-ers. During this group prayer time keeping it simple means your kids will be less intimidated.

    Then, add requests
Once you’ve gotten thanksgiving and praise down, start your prayer time and ask if anyone has a request you can pray for. Again, model a simple prayer and go on with your thanks and praises. The next night, ask again for requests and this time ask if anyone else would like to pray for whatever request was given.

This might all seem ridiculously drawn out, but it’s worth it. These tips also work well when it’s the parents who are uncomfortable praying. Learn as a family!

    Things to keep in mind:

Keep a positive and encouraging attitude. Don’t critique prayers!
Move on to the next step only when everyone is ready.
Don’t force your kids to perform in front of others. You might be proud that your little prayer warrior is coming along, but wait until you’re sure they’re ready before you put them on the spot to pray at the next family reunion. Better yet, ask them privately first. (I learned this the hard way!)
Keep it informal. Keep it simple. Keep it real.
Don’t offer a choice. Instead of saying, “Would you like to go around and thank God for one thing?” Say, “Tonight we’re each going to thank God for one thing. I’ll start and we’ll go around the table.” Then close your eyes and start.

Do you have any tips for prayer time with kids? I’d love to hear them!

    Prima Latina Review

Prima Latina is a Latin Curriculum intended for 1st-3rd grade. I am using this curriculum with my first grader, Soleil. I researched a few different programs before settling on Prima Latina, and the fact that they offer an accompanying DVD was a huge selling point.

If you’re worried you could never teach your kids a foreign language you don’t speak, the DVD is a must. I am learning Latin right along with my first grader, and at the same pace!

    Here’s what each lesson covers

Practical Latin. Each lesson starts with a ready-to-use phrase, such as Salve! (Hello)

Reading and pronouncing Vowels, Consonants, Diphthongs.
The student learns to pronounce letters and read words. Did you know the Latin alphabet has no W?

Vocabulary. Each lesson gives vocabulary words to memorize. The student learns to say, read, and write the words.

Derivatives. I’m almost positive that at the age of six I had no idea what a derivative was. Soleil can not only tell you what that means, but she can tell you what Latin words some of our modern English words are derived from. I find this endlessly fascinating, but then I’m a word dork.

Prayer. Finally, the student learns a simple portion of a Latin prayer or doxology. They start by learning Oremus (or-ay-moos) which means Let us pray.

    DVD Instruction Videos

The DVD features a very likeable teacher who plainly explains everything in the book. I appreciate this for the sake of pronunciation. They do have a CD available, but I prefer the DVD, especially since it’s my first year.

    Notes

Prima Latina uses the ecclesiastical pronunciation, as opposed to Classical Latin.

While the student book is certainly useful, if you’re using this with a first grader it might not be necessary. I mainly use the Teacher Manualand do most of the work on our whiteboard, since Soleil gets plenty of writing practice in other subjects.

    Homegrown Grandma

    By Kathleen

The shade slaps against the window, hurriedly dropped from little fingers. “She’s here!”

Scrambling noises from inside, locks rattled, little squeals. The door flings open.
“GRANDMA!!” Pushing past each other, needing to be first, my arms open wide enough for both. Kissing warm heads and cheeks, I fear my heart will burst.

Oh, it is great to be loved like this.

A chance to get it right this time.

Amongst the blessing of being GRANDMA! to my most stalwart fans, is the gift of being an old broad who has learned a thing or two. There is only your arrival at certain passages of life, that will gift you with the knowledge necessary to fall into the wise old owl category.

The coolest part isn’t my exceptional wisdom [it’s there, baby], although I will admit that having many answers for many questions does lift my wrinkled little ego a bit–No, no–the best part is, even if I don’t know the right answer–if I speak with an air of confidence–everyone buys it!

Life as a grandma is grand, ma. Should you be blessed enough to have your own child raising their own children, and if said children are being treated as you would have them treated–then you can write your own script.

And I have. Our girls are ever welcome at our home. Even if they weren’t so low maintenance, we would adore spending time with them, as they seem to like us so much. However, we really hit the jackpot with our granddaughters. Take some Top Ramen, Cheetos, and an episode of iCarly, and you have a recipe for a grand afternoon. Pull out the old guitar [which none of us can play], bang out a semblance of a tune, and let the custom constructed songs fly–and it’s even better.

We have beds here for them. And a myriad of memories starting in the delivery room.

At some of the darkest points of our married life–the very mention of their names released the captive light–our hearts to pump once again.

Now this may all seem schmaltzy to you non-grandparent types–maybe you aren’t there yet. . . Or never will be. . . Or your grandkids live at your house, or are little knuckleheads. Not to worry–we’re all just walking our own path.

    Homegrown Mom Book Club

I am super excited to announce that our Book Club is launching today!

Head on over and sign up for our forum and you’ll get all the info you need. We’ll be reading and discussing Chapter One of A Woman After God’s Own Heart®
    this week.

Then, next Monday, we’ll meet at the forum for an online group chat at 5pm pacific time. That should give us West coast moms plenty of time to be done before dinner and East Coast moms before bedtime. If you’re in another country, I hope you can join in too!

The chat software is built into the forum, so you shouldn’t have to download anything special.

I am looking for someone to be an exclusive sponsor the book club, and receive advertising here on the blog. If you have a business or blog and want to advertise, email me for details.

Can’t wait to see you over there! Who will be the first new member?
